"Groove Me" Bass Lesson and Tab
/Bass tab and notation
This week we are taking a look at Vernie Robbins’ bassline on “Groove Me” by King Floyd. Robbins played bass in the house band at Malaco Records, along with Jerry Puckett on guitar and James Stroud on drums. This song was cut at the same session that produced “Mr Big Stuff” by Jean Knight. Here’s Jerry Puckett telling the story about how he put together the band for Malaco, and how these records were ignored by Stax and Atlantic records until they became big hits.
While listening to this song I decided to google “ah, sooky sooky now,” because it’s a phrase I guess I’ve heard in this song and other places, and never really thought about what it could mean. I found an interesting blog post by Azizi Powell that gives several linguistic theories about its possible origin, and if you keep reading into the comments there are even more theories.
